Kathy Perry was born in Santa Barbara, California. Both father and mother are preachers-evangelists. She is the second child in the family. Kathy graduated from Dos Pueblos High School in Goleta, California in 2003. When she was 19 years old she moved to Los Angeles. To Kathy Perry's music was influenced by the Queen, Nirvana, Alanis Morissette, Heart, Joni Mitchell, Incubus.
She recorded and released her debut album under the name Kathy Hudson in February 2001. From the LP two singles were released: "Trust In Me" and "Search Me". In support of the album, Perry took part in "The Strangely Normal Tour". Kathy Hudson's album did not get commercial success, however, it received mostly positive reviews from music critics, who praised her talent.
In 2004, Kathy joined "The Matrix", which was nominated for a Grammy and a summary of which was included cooperation with Lavigne, Shakira, and Korn. "Matrix" planned to record their own album with Perry.
The project ultimately was delayed because Perry appeared in 2004 in the review of the magazine "Blender", which called her "The Next Big Thing!". In her interview Kathy said that she was not a "typical Christian", mentioning that she had made "a lot of bad things" in her youth.
